Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was sensationally ousted in a vote of no confidence this afternoon

Socialist Party challenger Pedro Sanchez gained enough votes to support the no confidence motion when key Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) backed him.

Rajoy chose not to attend the second session of the debate, and so far has refused to step down, as Sanchez has urged him to do.

Sanchez is widely expected to become PM tomorrow, ahead of a general election.
