Pedro Sanchez became Spanish prime minister this morning.
For the first time in Spain’s democratic history, a no-confidence motion removed Mariano Rajoy from power.
“Pedro Sanchez will be the prime minister of the government and I want to be the first to congratulate him” Mariano Rajoy said in Congress ahead of the vote that ousted him.
Deputies in the lower house cast 180 to remove the Partido Popular leader with 169 against and 1 abstention.
The PSOE leader is now expected to call a general election. Sanchez tweeted “A new era in Spanish politics is beginning… I hope that we are all up to the responsibilities that we have ahead of us.”
