Estepona mayor Jose Maria Garcia Urbano has promised that the town hall will act quickly to help rebuild Laguna Village. The luxury commercial centre, well known for its upmarket beach clubs, restaurants and boutiques, was gutted by a wild fire on Saturday afternoon.

The fire, which is still under investigation, started in a wooded area just north of Laguna Village. Strong winds fanned the flames and social media showed dramatic footage as the thatched roof caught light incredibly quickly.

Miraculously there were no fatalalties, although a fireman was reported slightly injured.

The mayor took to Social Media on Saturday

“I want to show my support to the employers and workers affected by the fire that has affected the Laguna Village commercial centre.
We will expedite and facilitate its reconstruction.
I also want to thank all the staff and professionals who worked to quickly extinguish this fire.”

The fire forced the evacution of 30 houses, as well as 40 guests from the neighbouring Hotel Kempinski, which suffered slight damage. A total of 42 hectares were destroyed.
