Trocadero Marbella Rugby Club recorded a nail baiting 30-24 victory against CD Arquitectura in the first home game of the season.
It may have been late September but it felt like high summer as the teams took to the pitch at “Fortress Bahia” and the home spectators were soon looking for whatever shade they could, with the tree lined south banking proving especially popular as well as looking rather pastoral. Hopefully the club will have put the coverings on the carpas for the next match.
The match ball was flown in by drone (!) following an acrobatic display by the Marbella Aeromodelo Club. And it was the home side that got off to a flyer with a converted try within the first five minutes.
CD Arquitectura laid siege to the Marbella try line and went over, but from the restart and outstanding solo effort saw the score 16-10.
Too many penalties and conversions were going to waste, however, and there was a feeling that this might cost Marbella, as CD Arquitectura scored again to make it 16-17 at halftime.
Trocadero Marbella Rugby Club then put the squeeze on and, roared on by the crowd, put on a terrific display after CD Arquitectura had a player yellow carded. Two tries in quick succession saw them take a 30 – 17 lead, but then it was the turn of the visitors to put the pressure on, setting up comp again in the Marbella 22 and scoring again.
CD Arquitectura sniffed a last gasp victory but Marbella held on in the final minutes to take a 30-24 victory.
