Any hope that the huge fire that has devastated more than 6000 hectares of forest in the Sierra Bermeja might be under control was extinguished in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A day after Junta de Andalucia President Juanma Moreno visited the INFOCA Advanced Command post Sierra Bermeja fires started deliberately, says Junta President new blazes forced the evacuation of the villages of Júzcar, Alpandeire, Jubrique, Genalguacil, Faraján and Pujerra.
The fire has been classified as category E, the highest level. While yesterday it appeared that firefighters were at last stablising the situation, new flashpoints have left them struggling to contain the situation, as the dramatic post below shows.
There are 41 aircraft currently fighting the blaze, with over 300 firefighters on the ground. Another problem has been the forming of flammagenitus clouds from the intense heat. These have brought the added danger of high winds that have helped spread the fire.
At a Press briefing this morning, an INFOCA spokesperson admitted, “This fire has a life of its own”.
