In a brilliant team performance on Sunday, Trocadero Marbella Rugby Club reached the finals of the Liga AON 1 Division Andaluza.
After winning the first leg 16-0 in Marbella, the team beat CR Malaga 3-25 and booked a place in the final.
Marbella were expecting a tough and tight game with players Javi Garcia, Andrés Rivas and Javi Amunategui out through injury and Toby Francis called up by the Spanish U20 team to play the Junior World Cup.
The match began with both sides swapping penalties before Andrés Costa went over for the first try. A tight game saw the score 3-10 at half time.
The second half opened with a dazzling individual move by Jorge Hernandez -Gil going past several Malaga players for the try and the conversion made it 3-15. A penalty took the score to 3-18 and as the match went into the final quarter both sides tired and tempers frayed.
Malaga had a player yellow carded and this gave Marbella a numerical advantage that they used well. Umder 19 player August Nunez scored and Andrew converted making the score 3-25 before the final whistle blew and Marbella, the coaching staff and the many travelling supporters erupted in wild celebrations!
Trocadero Marbella Rugby Club will now face CR San Jeronimo in the finals at Seville’s Olympic Stadium on April 24.
