There was no fairytale win for Trocadero Marbella Rugby Club’s first ever match in the national league on Sunday, but the team gave a performance to be proud of.
Up against experienced CD Arquitectura club from Madrid, Marbella ran out in front of over 400 spectators at “Fortress Bahia’s Park” in glorious sunshine.
Marbella started as brightly as the weather, running in two tries and taking advantage of a yellow card shown to Arquitectura’s spiky number 15, and the fact that their kicker had obviously left his kicking boots somewhere outside Toledo. Marbella went in 13-10 at half time.
The home team were unable to keep the lead however, and a the combination of a yellow card for Marbella, and Arquitectura’s experience and fitness at this level saw them let in late scores to end the match 19-30.
Trocadero Marbella Rugby Club can take a lot from this first ever match, and they proved that they have the potential to compete at national level. And that they also enjoy some of the loudest supporters in Andalucia!
