Was Mijas fire deliberate?

As efforts still continue to control the Mijas wildfire that broke out in Friday afternoon, authorities have stated that the blaze was started either intentionally or through negligence

Carmen Crespo, Junta de Andalucia Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, told Canal Sur that the first indication was that the fire, which forced the evacuation of over 1000 people and has so far destroyed 1800 ha of countryside, was not the result of natural causes.

Residents of the Buenavista urbanization in Alhaurín el Grande were allowed to return to their homes this morning after being evacuated on Friday. Yesterday home owners at Lauro Golf and the La Paca urbanization (upper part), as well as the urbanizations of San Jorge, Ardalejos, La Chíchara and Alhaurín Golf, all of them in Alhaurín el Grande, returned to their homes.

Three other areas – Pescadores, El Chorro and Pinos de Alhaurín – that total around 650 buildings, are still judged too dangerous to return to. Thirty three people spent last night in two emergency shelters, 29 in the Alhaurín el Grande sports centre and 4 in the El Limón pavilion in Alhaurín de la Torre.

This morning Infoca’s work was focused mainly on two active fires around the Pinos de Alhaurín, a difficult ravine to reach. The fires are being fed due to the dry woodland.

Some 250 professionals from the INFOCA Plan and 50 members of the local fire departments worked through the night to combat the fire. This morning 200 Infoca professioanls, 7 heavy firefighting vehicles and 18 aircraft were deployed.

The fire still remains at Level 1.
