Marbella firemen came to the rescue of a mare that was trapped between a metal walkway and irrigation channel yesterday.
The rescue took place yesterday afternoon, on the Sendero Acequia del Río Guadalmina, in the municipality of Benahavís. Emergency services receieved a call that the horse, called ‘Dona’, had fallen on her side by the metal walkway and was unable to get out
A team from San Pedro rushed to the scene of the event, where they checked the condition of the animal. They evaluated the complexity of the rescue and, after considering several possibilities, decided that the safest to hoist Dona out using slings and cranes.
In the meantime they also contacted the horse’s owner as well as a vet to oversee the rescue operation.
The delicate operation to free Dona took the emergency services three hours and, once back on her feet, the mare was examined by the vet. Amazingly, Dona had sustained only superficial injuries to her legs and was able to walk back to her stable with her owner!
